Announcing the Library's First
Release of Orthodox Literature in Review
An Index of Book Reviews as seen
in Orthodox Church journals |
|
This is an Index of Book Reviews
appearing in journals published by various organizations in the Orthodox
Church. The Index includes
current and defunct journals, from the 1950s to the present.
The Index does not present full text of any of the reviews.
It is the task of the user to obtain the journal in which the
review appeared in order to read the review/s.
The Diocesan Library houses many of the journals queried for this
Index.
A list of journals and the individual issues queried (regardless of
whether reviews appeared in the issue) for this Index can be checked by
clicking on the appropriate tab at the bottom of the page in the Index.
The notation “Brief note” following the title of the book
reviewed indicates a review of one or a few short paragraphs in length.
This Index is an Excel file and can be
searched by using the “Find and Select” command at the top right side of
the page. The Index is
alphabetical by title of the book reviewed.
For each title entry, the author of the book is given along with
the name of the reviewer, and information on where the review appeared.
This Index is almost three years in development.
It began because of a need expressed by clergy at the 2009
Eastern American Diocesan Meeting in Jackson, NJ who needed more access
to book reviews of Orthodox materials.
We wish to thank Mary Ardrey, at the time a parishioner of All
Saints of North America Church in Middlebrook, VA, who took on this
project, set up the database for it and input the first one thousand
entries. Without her work,
this Index would not have appeared.
The Diocesan Library expects to release subsequent updates to
include additional journals as they become available to the Library
staff for query. We suggest
users contact the Diocesan Library first if a review is needed.
Donations to the Diocesan Library of Orthodox journals in any language
are welcome. Please contact
us if you wish to make a donation. |
| Announcing A Subject Index to the journal Life Transfigured |
|
This index provides title, author and subject access to the journal Life Transfigured, published
by Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Ellwood City, PA.
The index is arranged alphabetically by subject followed by title
of article, author (when known), and information concerning in which
issue the article appeared.
The index provides indexing for all issues of the journal dating from
1984 (Vol. 16, no. 1) through the current issue, Vol. 43 (2011).
The index is presented as an
Excel file and can be searched using the “Find and Select” command
at the top right side of the screen in the index.
This index is the work of Judy Terry, a very dedicated parish librarian
at St. John’s Orthodox Church in
Memphis, TN, who deserves all the credit for inspiring us to get busy
providing indices to Orthodox periodicals.
The role of the Diocesan Library in this project is as editor and
then indexer of the issues of Life Transfigured which St. John’s library does not own.
Without Judy’s kick off work on this project, this Index would
not have appeared on our Web site in its present form.
We expect to complete the indexing of Volumes 1-15 as issues of the journal become available to us. |
The diocesan library is located in Augusta County, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The library serves primarily as the resource center for the Eastern American Diocese, its clergy and parishioners. The library collection is located in the parish hall next to All Saints of North America Russian Orthodox Church. Clergy, students, lay people, and the non-Orthodox interested in the Orthodox Church are welcome to use the library resources.
We can help you set up your parish library
Recognizing the importance of
libraries in parishes, the library staff offers assistance to Orthodox churches
wishing to set up and maintain
a parish library. The diocesan library functions as a book bank of
duplicate materials and makes them available to canonical Orthodox parishes
interested in establishing a library or adding materials to an existing one.
Books are free but parishes are asked to pay a nominal shipping and handling
fee. If interested, click on the
Duplicates Program page.
This website also offers "how to" information for parishes to answer questions and to assist them in establishing a library. It provides
useful links to
suppliers of library materials.
How the Diocesan Library can
help clergy The library functions as a lending
library for Orthodox clergy. To assist Orthodox clergy with books,
journal articles and other materials needed to conduct their ministry, the
diocesan
library offers borrowing privileges, full reference services, Internet
searching, and many other
informational services to Orthodox priests and deacons.

Reference Guides
The library periodically publishes reference guides/bibliographies on topics that fulfill needs and requests of clergy to assist them in their work. View the Downloads page for copies of any of the guides.
